Jewelry Organization Project (plus paint colors)

Here's a project I finished a few weeks ago, but haven't gotten around to posting about until now. I saw something similar to this in Better Homes and Gardens, and I just fell in love. They used a radiator grill like this woman, and even though I think it's really lovely, I didn't want to take the time to hunt one down AND spend a good chunk of change on it.

My friend, Carol, and I went the easy, budget route and bought a $6 roll of wire mesh from Home Depot. The employee recommended treating the metal with white vinegar before painting it, so I did. Once the vinegar was dry, I spray painted the mesh white (along with a frame that I already had).

I used a staple gun to secure the mesh to the frame, and viola! It's so functional! My dangly earrings just hook right on, and I used some tiny s-hooks to hang the necklaces.

It is SO much easier to find my jewelry now. AND my necklaces are no longer a tangled mess!

P.S.
Many of you asked about the specific colors we used in our design. So I will tell you!
1. The red spray paint that we used on the mirror and frame is called "Paprika" by Rustoleam in the satin finish.
2. The living room color is called "Silver Sage" by Restoration Hardware (although the paint itself is not Restoration Hardware brand).
3. The kitchen and nook color is called "Meditation" by Benjamin Moore. It's in the the swatch packet from Pottery Barn.

I'm hoping to post more photos of the rest of the house sometime very soon. I still need to get stuff hung up the the walls, and then make sure it's all tidy enough to take a picture :).

  4. LOVE this! I have done it with fabric before and this is so much cooler with the weave-y look from the wire mesh. Plus you don't have to use tacks which I didn't like with the fabric. Thanks for posting. Totally going to do it! xo Ruthie

  9. I made it for my friend for her b-day. I spray painted the whole thing black and it looks really good on her white wall. Thank you for the inspiration!

  12. this is so great. i had an old bulletin board that had a great frame to it. i took the bulletin board off the back, strung across the back some wire (there are about 4 rows) for my earrings. they just sit perched on the wires. and i added L shaped hooks to the bottom and sides to hang bracelets and necklaces. i now find myself buying earrings because they look like mini pieces of artwork when i hang them up. now nothing gets scratched, tangled, etc. i like the mesh idea, too. such fun stuff!

  13. Hi there. Love this project, but I was wondering if you could be quite specific about what kind of mesh you used.

    27 in. x 8 ft. Steel Lath?
Phifer 36 in. x 84 in. Charcoal Fiberglass Screen?

    Thanks.
