Embroidery

I've been trying my hand at some embroidery recently, and I've REALLY been enjoying it. So far I've only done a few onesies, but I'm looking forward to tackling a little pink hoodie next. My mother-in-law just bought me an AWESOME book about embroidery with tons of photos and illustrations. She found it at a thrift store... what a treasure! I wish I had taken a photo of it to show you all its magnificence. Perhaps that will be in a later post.

So with all that said, here's my first attempt... I took the photo in the car right before I gave it to a sweet friend who just had a little girl.

This is the one I just completed. I got the pattern from this delightful store on etsy.com.

It's such a cute little graphic!

Here's a question from an inexperienced needle-worker: is there anything I could or should attach to the wrong side of the design so that it won't fall apart in the wash or irritate baby skin? I use the wash-away stabilizer while I'm stitching, but that's it. Does anyone have any insight for me?

  2. Check out the different fusible interfacings available at the fabric store. After the design is done, you can fuse a piece of interfacing to the back of the embroidery. Look for a tricot or something that is woven, rather than the papery kind. I think Gymboree does this with it's embroideries on baby garments...

  4. Lauren's definitely right!
I actually saw your post not that long ago of the cute lil winged-onesies and had to try it myself!
I teach preschool and my co-teacher was pregnant with her first baby girl. I made a set of 5 butterfly winged-onesies (all with different polka dot patterned fabric) and used some light interfacing for the embroidery on the front of each.
I really love your crafts & DIY projects --- I can't stop sharing them with my friends!!

Oh yes! And lastly, have you looked into http://www.nutandbee.com/ ? They've got some great lil friends there!!

  7. Those are super cute! I love all the crafty things you do. Oh I totally have a question for you if I may? At Diana's "thank you/Christmas concert" you sang a song that you wrote for Lucy. I was wondering if you had recorded that song? I just loved it!

  8. Lucy's new pillowcase dress belongs in this category...even though I didn't do the embroidery..I found the pillowcase at the Goodwill for .99 and washed it..it took 20 minutes to sew it and 2 minutes to put the ribbons thru..Hope she enjoys it..

  9. I'm pregnant with my first and starting to make some things like this. Fusible interfacing is awesome. I'm also making baby quilts and thought of making you one! I think I saw from a post of yours we're about a week apart. If I ever get it done, I'll send it to you! www.babydaisyquilts.com
