Orange Calls To Me

I'm not sure what it is about orange, but I'm totally into it right now. I saw this chair at one of my favorite antique stores in Nashville last week but decided to pass on it. When I went in again a few days ago, I couldn't resist it's retro charm... especially with a $42 price tag.

I've seen so many "chair makeovers" in magazines recently, and I saw potential in this really solid, comfortable beauty. I'm planning to paint the wood white to give it a much fresher appearance. I'm going to wait until after the baby's born just to be safe (no toxic paint fumes!). Since it has those wicker sections, do you think I should try to use latex paint and a brush, or semi-gloss spray paint? I've never painted anything like this before. Ideas?

  1. That is an awesome chair!! I would keep it the way it is but if you do paint it I think a spray can on the wicker might be easier to work with.
Good luck can't wait to see the finished project.

  3. yeah.... I hate the idea of spray paint... but... they have some great options for colors and finishes these days... and it probably will be much less of a headache than painting... with a brush... love it though...

  4. I'm sure Grandma Elsie had that one in her dining room ... only the fabric was gold. It was called Mediterranean style. White would update it, but I think it would be a hassle to paint, and you might not be happy with the result.

  5. the wood on the chair looks gorgeous and matches the rest of the wood in that room. refinish the wood, take the wicker part off and reupholster the chair.

  6. Love the chair JJ! Great deal at $42 too. My grandmother has one just like it that I've been trying to get her to give to me for quite a while.

  7. I don't think you should paint it at all! It's amazing the way it is, what a beautiful chair!

  8. Well, i love the chair, but i think, if painted white it would be popping out too much... The dark wood matches the other pieces of furniture you've got very well! What I like a lot is the contrast of orange and this light shade of blue on your wall (first picture). It blends in very nicely, but still is an eyecatcher!

  9. Orange is my FAVORITE color. Don't reupholster it!!!! If it were my chair, I'd paint it white. (And I like dark wood usually.) I think that the orange and white together would make it stand out more. What paint to use? Using a brush might make streak marks, which I don't like on furniture. If you sanded it, spray-painting might be the best option, but I'm not a pro. :)

  10. I would totally paint it white too...good idea. I'm sure you could find a no or low-VOC (fume-free) spray paint, that way you wouldn't have to worry about it with the baby. Good luck!

  12. If you do refinish it and decide not to spraypaint (If you do use spraypaint get a sturdy mask- the fumes are terrible)take off the finishing then prime it then paint. Also, I would paint it white too. The orange will be much more vibrant that way. Plus, the white will match the white color in the chair nearby.
